Ford’s Atlas pickup — widely believed to hint at the new F-150 pickup that goes on sale next year — was named best concept truck. The Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis, which paves the way for the next generation of Hyundai’s Genesis sedan, took the honors as best concept car. BMW’s i8 Spyder, a plug-in hybrid electric roadster that’s very close to the upcoming production model, was named best production preview vehicle.
Two of the three winners — the Atlas and HCD-14 — were first shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.
Automakers build concept cars to attract attention and test new ideas, said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics.
“The days of blue-sky concepts” that had no connection to reality are over, Hall said. “Companies now build concept cars that are thinly veiled versions of upcoming production models to test the reaction and telegraph new design directions.”

“Our primary objective was to stretch the envelope and give customers a vision of what the future might hold” for the F-150 and SuperDuty pickups, said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager.
That included a new front end and interior design intended to reinforce the trucks’ image of do-anything capability.
The Atlas also features fuel-saving features that could save up to two m.p.g. in highway driving and new systems to make it easier for drivers to back up trailers and maneuver pickups in tight spaces.
More than two dozen automotive journalists voted on the awards, choosing among concept cars that made their North American debuts at the most recent auto shows in Detroit, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.
