Chrysler June Sales: Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee Still Hot

Chrysler Group is on a roll, reporting its 39th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains this morning. The Auburn Hills, Michigan-based automaker sold a total of 156,686 vehicles last month, representing an increase of eight percent over the same period last year. In the first six months of 2013, the company sold 908,332 vehicles, an increase of nine percent over 2012.

Winners: Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler

Two of Chrysler Group’s most venerable nameplates – the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler – went toe-to-toe for the number two spot in Jeep’s June sales. The two SUVs were separated by just 461 units last month: the Grand Cherokee edged out the Wrangler 16,626 to 16,165. However, the Grand Cherokee’s number represents a leap of 33 percent over last June – most likely thanks to the updated 2014 Grand Cherokee going on sale earlier this spring – whereas, the Wrangler saw an increase of just 12 percent over last year. Year-to-date, the Grand Cherokee is ahead of the Wrangler by about 3000 units; so far this year, the Grand Cherokee has sold 80,796 copies and the Wrangler has sold 77,728 copies.

Winner: Chrysler 200

2013 Chrysler 200 S rear three quarter 300x199 imageDespite being long-in-the-tooth and due for its replacement to be announced in the next six to nine months, the Chrysler 200 continues to sell well. 2013 saw an expanded availability of the sporty-looking 200 S model and the 200 convertible had enhancements to its ride and handling, both of which probably helped Chrysler’s midsize sedan’s sales to rise 14 percent to 12,360 last month. That makes the 200 the Chrysler brand’s best-selling vehicle and the fourth-best-selling vehicle for all of Chrysler Group in June. The 200 is also number four in the year-to-date numbers – the sedan is up nine percent to 75,015 in the first six months of 2013.

Keep an Eye on This One: Ram Pickup

The pickup wars rage on. Unsurprisingly, the Ram Pickup continues to be Chrysler Group’s best-selling vehicle, last month moving 29,644 units, an increase of 24 percent over the same time last year. Year-to-date, Ram has sold 170,319 of its pickups, which represents a bump of 23 percent from the first half of 2012. Much credit for the Pickup’s uptick in sales goes to the enhanced 2013 light- and heavy-duty models, all of which are now on sale. Expect sales to pick up further when the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel goes on sale at the end of this year. In the vacuum of Chrysler Group, all is bright and shiny for the Ram Pickup, but neither Ford nor General Motors have announced their sales yet; Ram has yet to trump either the Ford F-Series or the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra.

Keep an Eye on This One: Fiat 500L

In its first month on sale, Fiat already moved 541 copies of its larger 500L hatchback. The 500L is supposed to help expand the brand’s appeal in the U.S. market for buyers looking for Italian style and flair, but who need more space than the standard 500 hatch and convertible offer. Thanks to the 500L, Fiat’s sales stayed flat in June (an increase of just 46 units, an increase of one percent), despite the regular 500 being down 12 percent to 3509 copies.

Loser: Chrysler 300

Chrysler’s large sedan, the 300, took a hit last month, stumbling by 39 percent — the largest drop of any Chrysler Group models still in production. There were 4280 300s sold in June 2013, versus 6971 in June of 2012, and sales through the first six months of this year were down to 29,445, which is off by 28 percent from last year. A refreshed Chrysler 300 is due to be revealed next year for the 2015 model year. Interestingly, the 300′s Dodge Charger platform mate was up by 15 percent to 9812 units last month.

Bring Out Your Dead: Jeep Liberty

Despite it going out of production last summer, Jeep dealers are still selling off the last Liberty SUVs sitting on lots. Jeep sold 94 copies of the Liberty last month, bringing the year-to-date total to 5988 copies. The Liberty is being replaced this fall by the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee, which was revealed at the New York auto show in March. The 2014 Cherokee shares its platform with the Dodge Dart and is powered by either a 184-hp 2.4-liter I-4 or a 271-hp 3.2-liter V-6, both mated to a nine-speed automatic. The 2014 Cherokee goes on sale in the third quarter of this year and starts at $23,990, including destination.
