Chevrolet Cruze Blows Away Compact Car Competition

The Chevrolet Cruze climbed four spots from fifth place in May to claim the top spot in June – the compact bow-tie’s first podium finish this year. With the new compact sales leader, the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, and Hyundai Elantra each fell one spot in June.

Chevrolet sold 32,871 Cruze sedans last month, an increase of 9816 units from May as well as an increase of 73.2 percent from June 2012. Each of May’s top four finishers were pushed down one spot each with the Honda Civic finishing in second place with 29,724 units sold, while 26,458 Toyota Corolla/Matrix cars were sold. Ford moved 23,144 Focus sedan and hatchbacks for a fourth place finish with the Hyundai Elantra finishing in fifth place with 22,163 units sold.

The Volkswagen Jetta/Jetta Sportwagen (14,813) and Nissan Sentra (10,199) held onto their sixth- and seventh-place spots, respectively, while the Mazda3 (7566) defended its eighth place finish. Swapping places with the Dodge Dart, the Subaru Impreza/WRX (6907) climbs two spots to ninth place, while the Kia Forte (6620) remains in tenth place.

Slipping two spots to ninth place, the Dodge Dart (6437) finishes ahead of the Volkswagen Golf/GTI lineup, which remains in twelfth place with 2602 units sold.

While the Cruze may be first in June, the Corolla is still number one for the first half of 2013 with the Civic in a close second place. The Focus is in a distant third with the Cruze close behind in fourth place; the Elantra is fifth place to date with a strong lead over the rest of the segment.
